Daedalus Quartet at Kohl Mansion

Daedelus Quartet at Kohl Mansion, Jeremy Sutton, 2018, iPad Pro, Apple Pencil, Procreate 4

This sketch was created using an iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and Procreate app from direct observation of the Daedalus Quartet playing at the historic Kohl Mansion, part of the Music at Kohl Mansion program. The musicians featured in this drawing are Min-Young Kim, violin, Matilda Kaul, violin, Jessica Thompson, viola and Thomas Kraines, cello. They played works by composers Leos Jancek (String Quartet No. 1, “Kreutzer Sonata”), Anna Weesner (“The Space Between”) and Ludvig van Beethoven (String Quartet No. 10 in E-flat Major, Op. 74, “Harp”).

Here is a brush stroke by brush stroke replay of the creative process:

I was at the concert supporting Peggy Gyulai who is this season’s Music at Kohl Mansion Painter-in-Residence and was displaying beautiful artwork relating to the music from the season, including a piece specially created in response to the Weesner’s “The Space Between”.

West Hollywood Garden, Jeremy Sutton, 2018, iPad Pro, Apple Pencil, Procreate 4

This sketch was created using an iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and Procreate app from direct observation of Peggy painting the scene in our friend Jennifer’s garden in West Hollywood.

“Gustavo” – a VR Portrait

Gustavo – VR Portrait, Jeremy Sutton, 2018, Oculus Rift, Tilt Brush

This is my first 3D painted / sculpted observational portrait drawn 100% freehand in Virtual Reality (VR) using the Oculus Rift VR system with Google Tilt Brush software. The portrait was created from scratch without use of any imported 3D scan or wireframe model. My visual reference was a series of photographs I took of my friend and fellow artist Gustavo Ramos Rivera, whose studio is also in the 1890 Bryant Building where my art studio is located.

In the video below I share some of the creative process and you’ll see the brush stroke by brush stroke replay of the 3D portrait in the Tilt Brush environment. You’ll also see the very first brush stroke of the artwork, which I did live at the Fall Open Studios, November 11, 2017.

…and here (below) is a short video showing my first ever 3D print based on this VR portrait, in fact my very first 3D print of any VR artwork. It is clearly a work in progress and still needs some “chipping away”!!

Many thanks to my studio neighbor, Diego, and to Imagination Supply Co, for kindly helping me with this first draft 3D print!

Earlier I had painted a 2D portrait of Gustavo which you can see here.

Spring Open Studios 2018

From L to R: Myself, Drew Zingg (Birdland All-Stars’ guitarist) with his son, Erin and Birdland All-Stars’ bandleader and drummer, Tommy Igoe, in my studio standing in front of artwork from the tour.

On April 7th and 8th, 2018, I opened my studio for the Spring Open Studios Art Exhibition, part of the Mission Artists Sprint Open Studios. I exhibited art from three series (click on series titles for more information and examples of each series):

1. Art of Jazz

My latest musical artworks fresh from being created live on tour with Tommy Igoe’s Birdland All-Stars.

If you’d like to see the next Art of Jazz live performance please come to the upcoming show on Saturday, July 14, 2018, 8 p.m. at Dinkelspiel Auditorium, Stanford University, Stanford, California. We will be part of the Stanford Jazz Festival 2018. Click here for more information.

2. Iconic Silicon Valley Places

Plein air iPad drawings drawn on location of places that play or have played a significant role in the history of computers and Silicon Valley; and
Apple Park, “The Spaceship”, Cupertino

3. Figure Drawings – From Life

A selection of life drawings from the last two years.
Inky – 5 minute pose, 12″ x 16″, 2017

I was thrilled to have the pleasure of welcoming Birdland All-Stars members to my studio:

Erin, Tommy and I with the artwork Tommy purchased for his home.

Myself and Christian Pepin (Birdland All-Stars’ percussionist) next to the drawing I made of Christian as he played percussion during the tour.

Tommy, myself and Steffen Kuehn (Birdland All-Stars’ trumpeter).

Laura, our wonderful Birdland All-Stars’ production manager Michael Oliver and I.

Spring Open Studios coincided with my birthday this year and I couldn’t resist sharing this hilarious JibJab greeting I received from my cousin Dave and his wife Shelley! It not only nailed my dance moves but even my 1950s rust colored suit!!

Portrait of John Church

Portrait of John Church
22″ x 30″, mixed media on canvas

John Church with the Master of Pembroke College, Dame Lynne Brindley

This portrait was created to honor John Church, Bursar of my alma mater Pembroke College, Oxford University, on his retirement. It was presented to him at a special lecture and dinner on March 15th, 2018.

The painting incorporates significant images, elements, honors, awards and documents relating to John’s professional career as well as his life outside work. Most prominent is the award-winning bridge he is standing on. John led on the whole project management of the Bridging Centuries project which included the bridge, the new Quad and the range of new facilities it offers, including the art gallery, lecture theatre, 100 study bedrooms, cafe, seminar rooms, etc..

John taking a close look at the painting

This painting is a mixed media work on canvas. I started with research, gathering source materials and ideas. I then digitally painted an initial draft, using a Macintosh iMac computer, Wacom Intuos Pro graphics tablet and Corel Painter 2018 software. I then produced a pigment ink print on canvas and worked on to it with a variety of acrylic gels, glazes, paint media and varnishes. As Bridging Centuries bridged time and space, my painting bridged media, from digital to traditional…

Art of Jazz Tour 2018
Artworks

Enjoy these photos and artworks from the epic and amazing Art of Jazz tour with the Birdland All-Stars featuring Tommy Igoe where I painted live on stage as the band played, working in three media: on canvas, paper and iPad. For overview video click here. On this five week tour I performed in 20 cities, travelled 6,500 miles in the bus (plus another 6,000 miles on plane) and created over 125 artworks. The artworks were silent auctioned immediately following each performance.

The cross-media live performances were a unique combined sonic/visual experience or, as Tommy said:
“Sonic zoo / visual zoo!! Jeremy, you’re as much a jazz artist as we are. Visually representing what we do sonically.”
As with jazz I improvised and took risk and created something completely different for every show. Tommy expressed it as “dangerous creativity” where “the wheels could come off the bus”, though they in fact never do…

Ocean Surf Caddy

During a week segment in the middle of my Art of Jazz tour painting with the Birdland All-Stars featuring Tommy Igoe, I stayed in Miami Beach at the historic 1940 Art Deco Ocean Surf Hotel. One morning I came out of the hotel to find a beautiful pink 1959 Cadillac Convertible, “wings” ‘n’ all, parked outside! It turned out it was for a fashion photo shoot. Not to miss such a great opportunity to build on my on-going series of Miami South Beach Art Deco hotels with classic cars (even though this is Miami North Beach, not Miami South Beach), I got my iPad out and started painting, while trying to keep out of their way and out of the backgrounds to their shots!

The scene I captured in my painting is that of a very special and unusual part of Miami Beach, a quiet off-the-beaten-track block that feels more like 1940 than 2018. It’s a gem that is going to vchange dramatically in the coming few years as this Miami Herald article explains.

This painting is part of my Miami Beach Art Deco Series which currently comprises:
Avalon Olds
Beacon Bel-Air
Breakwater Chevy
Majestic Kaiser
Ocean Surf Caddy
Park Central Olds

Live Painting of Holiday Party

San Francisco City Hall Rotunda

Live painting of the scene at a Google Holiday Party in the magnificent and historic San Francisco City Hall Rotunda. This took approximately three hours and was created using iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and Procreate app. My iPad screen image was displayed on a 46″ LED screen. The party theme was Winter Wonderland and my choice of background imagery (snow and trees) and colors reflected that. Guests were fascinated to see the painting unfold and many came up to compliment me on the emerging artwork and ask about my process and tools.

Here’s of video showing the scene and the replay of the artwork stroke by stroke:

Thank you Kristen and Lauren – great working with you!
