Live iPad Painting at Opening of
David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition
de Young Museum, San Francisco

The two iPad drawings shown above were inspired David Hockney’s work iPad drawings in the de Young show. Both these drawings were both created in the exhibition using the Sketch Club app with the Adonit Jot Touch stylus. The first one, which I spent about two hours on, was based on the replay video video showing Hockney’s process of building up a painting from start to finish. Every time I looked up I saw a different stage of the painting which made an interesting subject changing with time. Thank you Robert for kindly taking the video of me painting. By contrast the second one was created in the last ten minutes of the show, sitting in front of one of Hockney’s large scale iPad prints. The guards almost had to push me out of the gallery! The inspirations for both of these were from paintings that were part of Hockney’s ensemble of works entitled “The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011 (Twenty Eleven) Version 3, 2011-2013”.

I taught two show related iPad art workshops, “Paint on the Go! Inspired by Hockney”. The workshops drew upon ideas, themes and inspiration from the show, and included a guided tour of the Hockney show in which I highlighted the lessons we can learn from Hockney in the context of drawing and painting on your iPad. We then applied these artistic and thematic lessons to painting in the exhibition itself, much to the fascination of onlookers, as you can see from the photo below show student Henk Dawson painting in the show:

About Hockney and the “Bigger Exhibition”

It was visiting the “Bigger Picture” David Hockney exhibition at the Royal Academy in London, January 2012, and experiencing the impact of his large iPad paintings, as well as video replays of his iPad paintings, on display in such a traditional environment that kick-started my exploration in earnest of using the iPad as a serious fine art tool, after twenty years of digital painting on the iPad’s big brother, the Macintosh computer. Besides the opening of the Hockney show at the de Young Museum, I’ve subsequently performed live iPad painting at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s America Now! Innovation in Art event; at the Seoul Museum of Art as part of their Digifun Mobile Art Festival; at the flagship Apple Stores in Regent Street, London, and in San Francisco; at the Oxford Internet Institute, Oxford University; at the SIGGRAPH Studio in Anaheim; at SEMA, the worlds largest custom car trade show in Las Vegas; as well as at other private and public events. You can see some of my iPad artwork at https://jeremysutton.com/ipad-mobile-art.

David Hockney is one of the greatest and most well-known living British artists. To see examples of his work and learn more about him see HockneyPictures.com, the Artsy Hockney page and his Wikipedia entry. His work has spanned a wide range of media, subjects, styles, points of view and size. Over the years he has worked with oils and acrylics on canvas, pencil, charcoal and watercolor on paper, color xerography, photographic collage (“joiners”), polaroids, multiple camera videos, and digital painting on his computer (Quantel Paintbox, TimeArts Oasis and Adobe Photoshop with Wacom tablet), iPhone and iPad (Brushes app), including synchronized digital video replays of his iPad drawings. His subjects have ranged from the iconic Los Angeles swimming pools to portraits and figures of himself, his family and friends, as well as interiors, still life studies and landscapes. The paintings you see at the top of this page are, on the left, an iPad self-portrait of Hockney and his iPad, and on the right, a plein air iPad painting of woods in Yorkshire. His style has varied from natural color high realism to non-natural color (with a tip of the hat to Fauves like Henri Matisse). His exploration of depicting the moving and ever-changing three dimensional world in static two dimensional artworks (with the exception of his video installations) has included juxtaposing and arranging multiple images into single artworks, making series of works of the same subject over time and seasons (in the spirit of Claude Monet), and taking themes and subjects and abstracting from them in series of works (such as his series based on Claude Lorrain’s “The Sermon on the Mount” with cubist inspiration from Pablo Picasso). He has pushed the boundaries of the size of his paintings, both traditional and digital, working on larger and larger artworks, many divided up into multiple canvases on a grid system. The “Bigger Exhibition” at the de Young Museum was a historic review of the work he created over the last decade, since the completion of his book “Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the Lost Techniques of the Old Masters”. It included huge prints of his iPad drawings and fascinating replays on screens showing his process and actual brush strokes. His example encouraged everyone to be free, take risks, look intently, draw from life and seek to express multiple vantage points in our work.

“Wow! Wow! and more Wow!  It is lovely.  Thank you so much for all your hard work.  We love it.

Thanks for doing it for us.  It is truly a magical capture of our day and will have pride of place on the wall.

Kind regards, Nicky and Steve xx

Congratulations Nicky and Steve! In this panorama collage painting I have visually woven together the story of your special day, starting with the ceremony in the magnificent and historical San Francisco City Hall, continuing with the amazing cable car tour and rounding it off with your first dance in the Fairmont Hotel.

I was so inspired by the beauty of your ceremony on the balcony in the magnificent San Francisco City Hall Rotunda that I decided to use the panorama of that scene as the backdrop for the painting. Your hand-written vows are included throughout the painting, as you can see in some of the artwork details below.

Early iPad Drawings

12.01.28-sketchusingZenBrush-04-800c

The iPad artworks shown on this page represent some of my earliest iPad drawings. They were created directly from life on an iPad without use of photography between 2010 and 2012. With the exception of the Amsterdam portrait, they are all made using a Nomad Brush. I use the long bristle option, which can be purchased by clicking on the right hand link above. The left hand link is the short bristle version. The sketch (above) was created using the ZenBrush app.

Pigment ink, acrylic gel medium, acrylic paint, metal leaf, Giants World Series ticket and spar varnish on canvas over a fibre glass structure with steel support and base. Large Heart commissioned by the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation and purchased by VISA. Was located at the Geary/Powell corner of Union Square, San Francisco, from February 10 – September 14th, 2011. The Union Square management estimated that approximately 9 million visitors saw this Heart while it was on the Square. I was commissioned by the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation to paint a Large Heart for the 2011 series of Hearts in San Francisco. This Heart was first publicly displayed at the Heroes & Hearts Luncheon in Union Square, San Francisco, on February 10, 2011, and then installed on the Square. VISA purchased this Heart – thank you VISA. See the StarkInsider video article about the unveiling of the Hearts. An interview with me is featured at 1 minute 22 seconds into the video. Also see John Darakjian’s YouTube video (an “artist’s eye” tour of the Heart).

The Heart is painted with a full color depiction of the Golden Gate Bridge and other contemporary San Francisco scenes (plus a San Francisco Giants World Series ticket)on one side and black and white film noir scenes of San Francisco from classic films on the other side. The color side was based on my painting San Francisco Heart. The films featured on the black and white side include: Cops (1922), San Francisco (1936), Sisters (1938), The Maltese Falcon (1941), Dark Passage (1947), DOA Original (1950) and Vertigo (1958). The depiction of the Maltese Falcon itself was based on the Maltese Falcon sculpture in the historic John’s Grill whose owner, John Konstin, was kind enough to grant me permission to photograph it. Actors featured on the film noir side of the Heart include Humphrey Bogart (Maltese Falcon and Dark Passage), Kim Novak (Vertigo), Buster Keaton (Cops), Edmond O’Brien (DOA), Spencer Tracy (San Francisco), Errol Flynn and Betty Davis (The Sisters). If you visit the Heart in person see how many of them you can spot!

THE PROCESS OF PAINTING THE HEART

Here are some views of the Heart while it was in my studio during the painting process.

When the heart first arrived...a blank canvas!
When the heart first arrived…a blank canvas!

thescene-02-400crop-_MG_9951

In painting this Heart I combined digital with traditional art media. The design was originally painted digitally using Corel Painter software, a Wacom Intuos4 pen tablet, Macintosh computer and a 30 inch Apple Cinema display. Using an Epson wide format inkjet printer I then printed the front and back images onto a total of 32 feet length of 44 inches wide coated canvas. This canvas digital print was then cut up and wrapped around the huge heart and adhered to it with acrylic gel medium. Transferring a flat painting onto a curved, almost spherical, form provided it’s own set of challenges and appreciation of the skill of clothing designers! I spent many weeks adding acrylic paint over the canvas. The paint was primarily applied thickly with a palette knife, with some brush painting as well. You can feel the impasto texture when you touch the Heart. I also added metal leaf and, as a tribute to the success of the local baseball team, a Giants World Series ticket (the World series was played as I was painting the Heart)! The whole Heart was then coated in multiple layers of spar varnish for uv and water protection.

“Hammerin’ Hank” Greenberg

“Hammerin’ Hank” Greenberg
2010
Mixed media on canvas, 54″ x 36″

This portrait is a tribute to the legendary baseball player Henry Benjamin “Hammerin’ Hank” Greenberg who played with the Detroit Tigers and, later in his career, with the Pittsburgh Pirates. During the 1930s Greenberg endured anti-semitic cat-calling from opposing team members and the crowds, reminiscent of the racially charged abuse directed a decade later against Jackie Robinson. Like Robinson, Greenberg’s exemplary skills on the field won over many. In 1934, when Greenberg played on the Jewish New Year and helped clinch the Tigers 2-1 pennant victory against the Red Sox, the Detroit Free Press ran “Happy New Year” on its front page in his honor. Greenberg, in his last year of professional baseball, met Jackie Robinson, who was starting his career in the major leagues, and encouraged him. They shared a common bond overcoming prejudice on and off the ball field. Greenberg was a five times All Star, twice named the American League’s Most Valuable Player and elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1956 and into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.

This portrait was exhibited at the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame of Northern California Gala on June 13th, 2010, where it was signed by Shawn Green who received the first Hank Greenberg award that evening. Here are some pictures from the event, plus some details of the painting.

Other baseball legends I have painted include Willie Mays and Jackie Robinson.

The Speech

The Speech: Portrait of Barack Obama, 2008, 38″ x 57″, mixed media on canvas

On August 28, 2008, I was watching on TV then-Senator Barack Obama giving his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Invesco Field, Denver, Colorado, as he was nominated to be the first African-American Presidential candidate. I was so moved by what he said that I took photos of my TV screen as he spoke to use as reference for a portrait. This painting is the result.

I created this digital sketch portrait of British IT pioneer, businesswoman and philanthropist, Dame Stephanie “Steve” Shirley, in a talk / demo I gave at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) in 2008. Dame Shirley is a 2018 honoree and recipient of one of the Computer History Museum Fellow Awards. The recording of the 2018 award ceremony, including a video from Dame Shirley, can be seen here.
