Dancing at the Presidio

Angie Major and I perform to “Opus No. One” at the Veterans Day USO-Style Dance at the Presidio Officers’ Club in San Francisco on November 9th, 2019. This version of “Opus No. One” was performed by Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra. The live painting of Dawn Hampton I refer to that I painted to the same music can be seen in my Happy Feet, Happy Paint video.

Huge thanks to Angie for inviting me to dance with her at this event as well as for her great choreography and collaborative creative spirit, to fellow dancers Hannah and Sean, to Mira, Zach, Dan and the rest of the fabulous team at the Presidio Officers’ Club for putting together this and other wonderful dances throughout the year, and to Don Neely’s Royal Society Jazz Orchestra for providing such great live music throughout the evening!

Winery Sunset Dinner

This live painting performance started by depicting the beautiful sunset view from the tasting room terrace of the magnificent Davis Estates winery in Calistoga, Napa Valley, California, followed by the painting of the members dinner. The painting, a 24″ x 48″ acrylic painting on canvas, was then presented to two guests and signed on the back by winery owners Mike and Sandy.

From Bar to Courtyard

This live painting performance started in the front bar area of the magnificent Trou Normand restaurant in San Francisco where the reception took place. We then moved to the inner courtyard of the restaurant for dinner and I continued painting there. The initial digital background canvas I started with reflected the color gradient branding of the client.

Graham and Jenny

Graham and Jenny, 2019, 30″ x 24″ Epson Ultrachrome pigment ink on Breathing Color Lyve canvas

This portrait was created from life in my studio using an iPad Pro 12.9, Apple Pencil 2 and the Procreate app. This image has been extended with the enhanced experiential dimensionality of an augmented reality (AR) component that is viewable using the free AR art app Artivive (“bringing art to life”). When you view this artwork through a smart device with the app Artivive open, you will see a super cool time-lapse replay video of my creative process plus contextual documentation of how the artwork was created (the same video shown immediately below). This means that when Graham and Jenny entertain visitors they can point their phones at their framed portrait hanging in their home and, using the Artivive app with the volume turned up, share this same video you see here magically superimposed over the artwork!

Click here to learn more about how I use AR in my art. For a sense of the AR buzz in the art world read this article in The Art Newspaper. Below are some photos from the studio showing Graham and Jenny after the portrait was finished.

Fall Open Studios 2019

Cellist Hallie Marshall-Pridham performed played D. Gabrielli’s Ricercares Solo Cello followed by J. S. Bach’s Cello Suites at my Fall Open Studios Exhibition. I painted her using the iPad, paper and canvas as she played. It was super fun! I also shared some of my latest artworks, such as ‘The Blue Tea-house, Vondel Park, Amsterdam’, and did other live demos.

AR-enabled Silicon Valley Series at the Atlas Cafe

The artworks on display at the Atlas Cafe, the series Iconic Silicon Valley Places, were all created on location from direct observation, ‘en plein air’, using the iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and Procreate app. Each was painted in a single session, ‘alla prima’. The prints are Bay Photo MetalPrints™, dye sublimation fused into aluminum. This series depicts places that have had important and iconic roles in the development of Silicon Valley as an incredible crucible for technology and innovation, created with a tool that is itself the product of Silicon Valley!

To add an extra dimension of insight into the creative process for each painting I have augmented them all utilizing the free app HP Reveal (see the videos taken by show organizer Shahasp, shown above). In other words I have enabled an Augmented Reality (AR) overlay that you can experience yourself using your phone or iPad or other mobile device. To make the most of your visit to the show please install the free app HP Reveal on your phone or mobile device and bring head phones so you can listen to the music associated with each piece! Turn your phone volume up. Open the app, allow it to use your phone camera, skip setting up an account, click on the target symbol (you’ll then see ‘bouncing balls’ superimposed over your camera view of what’s in front of you) and point your phone at each artwork in turn.

Please join me at the show on Sunday, November 3rd, 7pm – 8pm, for the End of Show reception. It’ll be the last chance to see the AR-enabled Iconic Silicon Valley Places series on display at the Atlas Cafe.

The iPad as an Art Tool

The combination of the iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and Procreate app offers a versatile and powerful art medium, one that is both responsive to the pressure applied as well as extremely portable and convenient. The challenges of the iPad as an art medium is the limited physical size and the smoothness of the glass surface.

For me the iPad complements traditional media, offering a new art medium that opens the door to a whole new world of different creative possibilities:

  • Easy sharing process through the built-in time-lapse replay functionality.
  • Paint that never dries so you can continuously and endlessly work into the surface, transforming what is already there.
  • Endlessly malleable substrate since the iPad glass never wears down, allowing you to work into your painting without fear of wearing through the substrate.
  • Instant access to your art materials that are ready for action within seconds and leave no mess behind – little to no set up or
    break down time.
  • Extreme portability – an art studio you can always have with you and you can take anywhere.

Chase Jarvis

This portrait was created as Chase Jarvis spoke at the Commonwealth Club, part of his Creative Calling book launch tour. Chase is the creator of CreativeLive with whom I created a Painter workshop a few years ago.

After the talk some of us went out for dinner and I sketched Chase and his wife Kate on my copy of his book:

The Blue Tea-house

This painting depicts a charming place to visit: ’t Blauwe Teehuis (‘The Blue Tea-house’) in the middle of Vondelpark, Amsterdam. It is based on a rainy morning with very few people around in the cafe. You can see in this painting a couple of very typical things for Vondelpark and Amsterdam: a bicycle and someone walking their dog! The bridge with the weeping willow reminded of of Monet’s bridge at Giverny. I created this painting based on iPhone reference photos I took that rainy morning and using Corel painter 2020 on an iMac with a Wacom Intuos Pro M Pen Tablet.

Kaylie

This portrait was created live on board a Virgin Atlantic flight from London to San Francisco. Flight attendant Kaylie kindly sat for her portrait which I created using an iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and the Procreate app. The wonderful crew let us sit in the bar for the sitting!

Mary Stallings at The Battery

On October 7th, 2019, I painted legendary singer Mary Stallings as she performed soulful jazz at an elegant sold-out evening in the gorgeous penthouse of the classy private club and hotel, The Battery San Francisco. The event was produced by the Red Curtain Addict team of Kari and Parker.

Throughout the night, Mary Stallings sang some of her favorite jazz standards that have been monumental throughout her career while I created a digital painting (using the iPad pro, Apple Pencil and Procreate app) inspired by what I saw and heard. The replay you see in the video above shares in a few seconds the entire creative process that spanned a couple of hours.

About Mary Stallings

New York Times has declared Mary Stallings as “perhaps the best jazz singer singing today” and continues to sell out prestigious venues such as the Lincoln Center, SFJAZZ Center, Herbst Theater, Prague National Theater, and iconic jazz clubs around the world.

Mary’s phenomenal career includes performances with Billy Eckstine, the Count Basie band, Cal Tjader, Dizzy Gillespie (among many others) and has shared the playbill with Joe Williams, Tony Bennett and Ella Fitzgerald.

Now, based in San Francisco, Mary has served as SFJAZZ’s Resident Artistic Director during the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 Seasons, received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the SFJAZZ Centers 2011 Gala and performed the opening song during the historic Opening Night concert at the SFJAZZ Center on January 2013.

Here are some more photos from the wonderful evening:
