AT&T One Powell
Live Scenic Painting at the Grand Opening

AT&T One Powell

Live painting created with iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and Procreate
53″ x 30″ pigment print on canvas

This was created live on September 29th, 2016, at the Grand Opening of AT&T’s new flagship store in San Francisco, the largest of it’s flagship stores in the world. This one is located at One Powell, San Francisco, next to the cable car turnaround where Powell meets Market, opposite the Westfield Centre. Please enjoy the video below that includes a replay of the entire painting process, compressing a creative journey that took around six hours into a minute.

The background that I start working on is actually a surface texture of the historic interior at One Powell. The whole painting was created en plain air from direct observation. Using the app Procreate, I sketched out the initial composition with the 6B Pencil, and then used variety of Sketching, Inking and Painting tools for the rest. I made a 53 inch wide by 30 inch high canvas pigment print of the final artwork for AT&T to hang in their facility.

iPad Figure Drawing Class
mDAC 2016

In the iPad Figure Drawing Class I taught at the mobile Digital Art & Creativity (mDAC) Summit in the Palo Alto Art Center on Sunday, August 14th, 2016, we drew from the model and explored movement, shape, line and tone, starting with short and moving poses and ending with longer poses. We used the app Procreate.

Drawing Roxy using the Touchjet POND and the ArtRage app on canvas. This was part of a demo on the opening night of the mDAC 2016 Summit.

On the technical side, by the end of this class participants knew how to:
1. Navigate around the Procreate interface and move between the gallery and drawing views;
2. Import an interesting backgrounds to draw over;
3. Choose, adjust and customize brushes and brush looks;
4. Pick and fine tune color using the color wheel and value/saturation circle;
5. Work on multiple layers; and
6. Playback, save and share your entire creative process as a replay video.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this class; to Sumit and Caroline for inviting me to teach at their great Summit; to Savage Interactive, the creators and publishers of Procreate, for their generous sponsorship of my class; to ArtRage for the use of their app with my Touchjet POND demo; to the Palo Alto Art Center who went out of their way to help accommodate all my needs for running this class, and to Amber for being an inspirational model!

Live iPad Portrait Painting
Cal. Academy of Sciences
August 4th, 2016

I painted portraits of guests at the California Academy of Sciences NightLife LIVE event in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, on August 4th, 2016. Situated outside in the West Garden, I was one of the featured Artspan Artists highlighted at this event. It was a very fun evening and the guests enjoyed watching the portraits being created, as well as having their own portraits sketched!

Here are some photos and portrait video replays from the night:

First Dance

Whitney and Kenny’s First Dance

July 30th, 2016, The Westin St. Francis Hotel, San Francisco
30″ x 22″, live iPad painting, pigment inkjet print on canvas

This was created live as Whitney and Kenny danced their first dance. I used an iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and the app Procreate. I initially worked on the background using some reference photos I took on my iPad of the wedding couple practicing (including their favorite move!) Then I worked live as they danced and followed up with a few finishing flourishes of color! You can see the whole process in the replay video below, which includes as a sound track the song they chose for their First Dance: A Thousand Years by Christina Perri.

Congratulations, Whitney and Kenny!

Portrait of David

David
2016, iPad Pro, Apple Pencil, Procreate

This was created one sunny afternoon in Sonoma at a friend’s home. David was visiting and we were all sitting down at a table. As he leaned on one hand in conversation with someone else I started sketching him on my iPad Pro, initially undetected! When he realized he was now the subject of a portrait he kindly held his position, including his hands, while I sketched away. The portrait sketch took about 30 minutes. You can see the process in the replay video below.

Kimigayo in Los Angeles, 7-26-2016

2016-kimigayo-in-LA-by-Jeremy-Sutton-24-800×400.jpg

Kimigayo in Los Angeles, 7-26-2016, 2016, pigment ink and acrylic on canvas, 40″ x 20″

This painting depicts a historic moment when the Japanese musician Atsushi, also known as Exile Atsushi, sang the Japanese national anthem, the Kimigayo (one of the world’s oldest and shortest national anthems) at the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball stadium on their annual Japan Night celebration, July 26, 2016. This was a particularly poignant moment given the history of WWII and the internment of Americans of Japanese descent on the West Coast.

Live iPad Portrait Painting
ILEA Gala 2016

Live iPad portrait painting at the ILEA Gala 2016, Armory, San Francisco

Thank you again for your support of the ILEA Gala! The character drawings were huge hits and added significantly to the success of the event!” ~ Sean F.

On July 19th, 2016, I performed live iPad portrait painting at the International Live Events Association – Northern California Chapter (ILEA-NCC) Annual Gala in the Armory SF. The venue was transformed into an adventure experience where guests travelled from the heart of the rainforest to the mysteries of the universe. I was one of the entertainers at the event who helped bring this interstellar vision to life. You can get a taste of the magic of the digital portrait painting in the video above and the photos below.

Cable Car on Powell

Cable Car on Powell
2016, pigment ink and acrylic on canvas, 30″ x 40″

I was walking back across Union Square in San Francisco late one afternoon after visiting the brand new Apple Store Union Square on it’s opening day, when I turned around and looked up Powell Street. The light was beautiful, catching the sides of the buildings in the distance, the steep street undulating it’s way up to the horizon. As I stood there a cable car rumbled past, working it’s way up the hill. I had my iPad in my hand so I lifted it up and snapped a picture as the cable car whizzed by in front of me. That picture served as the inspiration for this painting.

To create the digital painting I used the new Corel Painter 2017 on an iMac with a Wacom Intuos Pro M pen tablet. I then printed it out on canvas and worked into the surface with acrylic gels and paints.

(2 minutes 30 seconds)
