People & Work represents the people who work in Silicon Valley, many coming from all over the world to fill the need for tech workers as well as for workers in the vast infrastructure that supports Silicon Valley companies.

The Silicon Valley computer industry has fueled a population and jobs growth in the San Francisco Bay Area that parallels the economic growth of that industry. The estimated number of employed residents in the San Francisco Bay Area, many employed in jobs associated with Silicon Valley, grew from 3.15 million in 1990 to 3.38 million in 2000. It dropped to 3.27 million in 2010 due to the recession and is forecast to reach 4.35 million by 2040. The Draft Bay Area Plan of March 2013 predicts that “between 2010 and 2040, the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area is projected to add 1.1 million jobs, 2.1 million people and 660,000 homes, for a total of 4.5 million jobs, 9.3 million people and 3.4 million homes. The Bay Area’s three regional centers—San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland—will accommodate 42 percent of housing growth and 38 percent of total job growth by 2040.”
